Substitute the x-4 in to the second equation for the y: 2x+(x-4)=5 2x+x-4=5 Combine like terms and add the 4 to both sides 3x=9 Divide by 3: x=3 Substitute the 3 in for x in either equation and solve for y: y=3-4 y=-1 Answer: x=3 y=-1
