Following World War II, the United States had a democratic system, and the Soviet Union had a single-party system.  The U.S. had the Republican and Democratic parties and other smaller, less significant party affiliations after World War II.  The Soviet Union had a single-party system founded in 1912 called the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (C.P.S.U.)  The party was dissolved in 1991 and the Soviet Union collapsed because of a stagnant economy.
