Success or failure of a population of plants or animals is highly dependent on the availability of resources.  When resources are plentiful, the population that counts on that resource will grow.  When the resource is scarce, the population that counts on that resource will decline.  With your food chain, you have Grass --> Deer --> Wolves When the Deer population increases... a) The grass population will decrease because more deer are feeding on it.  As the grass decreases in abundance, the deer population will start to decline due to the limited resource. b)  The wolf population will increase with the increase in deer due to the increased availability of their food source.  As the deer population decreases, so will the wolf population.
