Ken has a pole that is 26 inches long. He wishes to cut it into two pieces so that one piece will be 8 inches longer than the other. How long must the shorter piece be?

What you do it take the 26 and divide it by 2, then you end up with two 13 inch poles. Then on one side you subtract 8(This is because you want the other pole to be 8 inches longer then the other pole piece.) and you get 5 inches. That is the length of the shorter piece.
