Given: squirrels and birds squirrels have one head and 4 legs birds have one head and 2 legs heads:   s + b = 16 legs :    4s + 2b = 44 s + b = 16 ⇒ s = 16 - b 4s + 2b = 44 Substitute s by its value. 4(16-b) + 2b = 44 64 - 4b + 2b = 44 -2b = 44 - 64 -2b = -20 b = -20/-2 b = 10  s = 16 - b s = 16 - 10 s = 6 There are 6 squirrels and 10 birds. s + b = 16 ⇒ 6 + 10 = 16 ⇒ 16 = 16 4s + 2b = 44 ⇒ 4(6) + 2(10) = 44 ⇒ 24 + 20 = 44 ⇒ 44 = 44
