In Medieval Europe, what was an icon?

In Medieval Europe an icon was religious paint made in Byzantine empire and later on other eastern orthodox countries and cration of icons have very special rules and canons (semi legend says that first icon was created bby Luke the Apostle that's why every icon look very similar to teh anccient middle eastern art)
