how do you write a fraction or a mixed number as a decimal?

You have to divide the fraction to get a decimal.

A fraction is just a short way of writing a division problem. Whenever you see a fraction, it actually means the numerator (top number) divided by the denominator (bottom number) . -- If you're starting with a mixed number, change it to an improper fraction. -- Now perform the division indicated by the fraction.  Personally, I prefer long division using a pencil, but you may certainly use a calculator if you wish. The quotient ... the answer to the division ... is the decimal form of the fraction or the mixed number.
