The southerners used cotton as a way to make money and before slaves would have to pick the cotton by hand which took a while, but when the cotton gin was invented it was much more efficient and faster, allowing more cotton to be collected and grown. Cotton became less of an expensive product because so much was now being grown and quickly picked by the machine.

The cotton gin changed southern life because the south thrived on the production of cotton as a main source of income. Therefore, over the years the new inventions that helped in the production of cotton made it easier for southerners to 'make a living' from cotton. Everything aided in the production, making it easier to pick and harvest the cotton after it grew.Hope this helps! :)
