Julius Caesar took the "throne" per to say, during a time of distress. In the Roman Republic, the system was that if the government was in chaos, a "dictator" could lead the people for a period of six months. Julius Caesar turned the Roman Repulic into the Roman Empire by coming in and taking the "dictator" role during the time of a civil war (elites vs lower classes), winning battles and reputation, then declaring him "dictator for life".
