Can you predict the meaning of a word if you know the meaning of the prefix?

You can guess what's the wourd is about the mean and in a given context it could be very helpful.  But by just the word only and the meaning of the prefix I don't think you can. For example if you have the word "preludium", and if you know that "pre-" means before or in front of. I wasn't able to find out to find the actual meaning of the word with just the prefix.
